The ACSM represents the interests of Specials manufacturers in the United Kingdom. Members include leading suppliers of sterile and non-sterile Specials, those whose business is with the community pharmacy, as well as hospitals, and the ACSM also has a public sector member.

The UK leads the world when it comes to manufacturing standards for pharmaceutical Specials. ACSM members work to GMP standards in MHRA approved facilities and, through specialisation and continuous investment, operate centres of excellence.

The ACSM membership criteria are:
 
"Members shall normally be:

(i) UK based manufacturers of specials medicines;

(ii) a holder of a specials manufacturers manufacturing authorisation issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) or any successor organisation carrying out similar functions to the MHRA;

(iii) private companies primarily or solely active at the manufacturer level of the supply chain.
 
Notwithstanding point (iii) above, the existing members may, in their absolute discretion, admit as a member any public organisation fulfilling points (i) and (ii) above, where it is in the best interests of the company to do so. The company may impose such terms and conditions as it sees fit upon such members."
