Special Help with Swallowing Medicine
Mary Chambers, a Diabetes Specialist Nurse, was asked to visit Lisa an obese 20 year old girl with type 2 diabetes and severe learning difficulties. The Hospital Consultant was concerned that based on blood glucose tests, Lisa’s diabetes was not being adequately controlled.
During discussions with Lisa’s mother, the nurse discovered that Lisa was having problems swallowing her antidiabetic tablets as they were rather large and difficult to swallow and was spitting them out or hiding them in the corner of her mouth and throwing them away later.
The Diabetes Nurse explained the situation to the Consultant Endocrinologist who prescribed a liquid suspension, which might be easier for the patient to swallow. The hospital Pharmacist contacted Rosemont Pharmaceuticals, specialists in liquid formulations and the company supplied a liquid version of her tablets as a Special.
The patient was much happier to swallow a pleasant peach and peppermint tasting liquid, the Consultant was pleased that Lisa’s diabetes became controlled and Lisa’s mother was delighted that her daughter’s health improved markedly and she was no longer finding tablets hidden under the bed!!
Due to the demand for blood glucose-lowering liquid as a Special, Rosemont applied to the MHRA for a license and it is now available as a fully licensed product.
